Beacon lies on the Hudson River about 60 miles north of the city of New York. It is an artistic community much visited by art lovers. Mervyn and I have visited several times to participate in workshops run by Basha Maryanska.
It is a charming town with many galleries and funky cafes. Pandorica’s is a fantastic café decorated deep blue like Dr Who’s Tardis! We were impressed by the Hudson Glass foundry and gallery next to RiverWinds Gallery on the main street.
The Coen Brother’s filmmakers have invested in Beacon artists’ community, buying the decommissioned high school and turning it into art studios. (Calling all property investors to do the same for Benalla!)
Benalla has a nice symmetry with Beacon as both host Not for Profit arts organizations promoting cultural vibrancy. New York based photographer Mary Ann Glass visited Benalla whilst in Victoria conducting workshops. On her return to New York Mary Ann asked 25 artists from the Hudson Valley to make the postcards now on show in Gallery 2 at NEA. In the spirit of Sister City-hood, Mary Anne offered us a reciprocal show in Beacon for artists from North East Victoria.
Our Inaugural Postcard Exchange is a cultivated space to broaden our artistic horizons and make a stimulating connection with artists on the other side of the globe. It is a playful concept designed to engage artists and public alike.
