A special Christmas exhibition provided by members of North East Artisans Friday December 6 2019 to Thursday January 9 2020 '$50 Christmas' is an exhibition of affordable artwork by members of the North East Artisans made or selected to meet the Christmas Season’s tradition of giving gifts. Our '$50 Christmas' exhibition provides gift opportunities which will be thoughtful, individual and have high personal and human value. Although the price of the artworks is fixed at a ridiculously low $50 – this is meant as a humorous and ironic gesture – but really - it is NEA's gift to Benalla's Festive Season. We're not making any money here.... The idea of the exhibition is to bring NEA's exhibition space into the commercial domain with a $50 splash opportunity for the Festive Season commercial mayhem period. There is no entry fee (waived) but the 20% commission stands - so the "in hand" artist payment for sold works will be $40. We hope the exhibition will help the Gallery Shop as well....if there's nothing in the exhibition then try the shop.... The exhibition runs from Friday December 6 to Thursday January 9. Works are to be dropped off on Tuesday 3rd December from 10 am to 4 pm and collected on 10 January from 10 am to 4 pm. Further details are available on the attached Conditions and Application form. We don't expect members to give works away - but if there is oldish stock or an idea for a less labour intensive artwork than usual this is the time to bring it forward The EXHIBITION team - simon, bev, cathy, frank and grace (and sometimes Tim) The Exhibition team is sending out invitations today to NEA members to enter works in the '$50' Christmas exhibition. If you are thinking of entering, or find yourself talking to a member who may be interested, the work entered doesn't need to be new work, can be concepts you are currently developing.
Entries are due in next Tuesday 3rd December, although there will be some grace as the opening isn't until Friday 6 December. Please check out the web post below, the Conditions and Application form, and the poster developed by Tim Bowtell in response to an invitation by Simon Klose, Exhibitions team leader. It's already causing lots of discussion... which is what art's all about! (If you are aware of rapper 50 Cents...or Fiddycents you'll understand the connection!) Presenting 'Gallery Choir' at NEA, hosted by Beechworth musician Marisa Quigley! To celebrate NEA's 5th Birthday we'll be rounding off 2019 with a fun-filled evening of laughter, song, drinks and cake on Saturday evening, 14th December from 7 pm..
What is Gallery Choir you ask? NEA's Gallery Choir event draws upon on the community music concept of a pub choir founded in Brisbane, Australia in 2017. The host arranges a popular song and teaches it to the audience, concluding with a performance which is filmed and shared on social media. All ages* and abilities welcome! Tix are on sale now at NEA and bookings are essential! Birthday and end of year celebrations 5-7pm (free entry, bring a platter) Gallery Choir from 7pm ($5 adult/under 10's free) Drinks at bar prices, strictly No BYO *Under 18's must be accompanied by responsible parent/guardian A few months ago, NEA published a flyer from an organisation dedicated to saving pianos from landfill. An exhibition was planned for November at the North Melbourne Meat Market for local artisans and craftspeople to design and build objects from parts of unwanted pianos. I knew that Bill McCabe from Benalla had dismantled his old family instrument, a 1923 Beale, Australian made, and that he had a few bits left. From Bill, I was able to source a leg, the front panel, the sheetmusic shelf, some bits if ebony and ivory keys, and some miscellaneous fittings. I scratch built a stick dulcimer, which apart from the machine head tuners, strings and frets, was made entirely from the Beale parts, and entered it in the exhibition. Mary and I attended the presentation night, mainly for the food and wine, and to see what others had created, so I was absolutely blown away when my name as read out as the winner in my section. …….with respect for the pianos musical heritage, to create something that gives the piano new purpose in music… $600 prize, and a great experience. Thank you NEA. Rodney Horsfall Rodney Horsfall photographed with an admirer from California, and the winning entry

Don’t expect works to be glazed and framed = although some may be – but expect a great gift opportunity provided by people who share the North East with us and want to provide a positive human contribution to the seasons character. Simon Klose This slide show is under construction - More to come!

Building on the success of the 2018 Window to Window event, businesses have agreed to participate in the event, paying a fee to contribute to the costs of the events which includes paint, painting supoplies, insurance and promotional materials.
NEA studio artists, exhibitors and members painted windows in 2018, with many already planning to participate again in 2019. A 'pro bono' contribution to the community by artists, last year proved to be a quite joyous happening, with people enjoying strolling between windows as artists worked on their windows, followed up by admiring glances over the pre Christmas shopping period. If you would like to participate, please contact Jim Myconos on 0448 817 006 or call in to see Jim at 'She's Arty' opposite NEA. Check out images of last year's festival - https://www.northeastartisans.org/news/window-to-window-2018-nea-and-other-artists-in-action-november-30 Many NEA artisans are looking forward to the Makers' Market to be held under the beautiful trees near the Benalla Art Gallery on Saturday morning, 23 November. It's almost time for the end of year exhibition of work by students from the Flexible Learning Centre, which is scheduled for Tuesday 19 to Saturday 30 November.
This round up of April's exhibition of work 'Kaleidoscope of Colour' on the NEFLC website is interesting to read. (Click on the image for a clearer view). NEA members visiting Wangaratta are finding time to pop in to see the new 'Art Gallery on Ovens', a wonderful initiative involving a cooperative of twelve fine artists who live and work in North East Victoria. It's a beautiful space in the blue stone lane way beside Where's My Coffee (formerly Gloria Jeans) in Ovens Street, Wangaratta near the bridge. Congratulations to all concerned, including NEA exhibitors Janet Leith and Joan Mullarvey, and past exhibitor Kate Jenvey.
