'In April 2017 NEA facilitated 'Between the Walls', the inaugural Benalla Street Art Fringe Festival, drawing together eagerly planned for community events which hadn't been included in the 'official Wall to Wall program' . T- Shirts were printed, a poster mirroring the official poster designed, and 'Between the Walls' became a reality. .
Local street artists Tim Bowtell, Edie Black, Cristen Brunner and Skinny, although not on the official Wall to Wall program, were allocated walls, joining the 23 'official' artists in transformational painting of walls in Benalla and district over the weekend.. North East Artisans Gift Shop/Gallery 1 was a hub of activity, Gallery 2 featured the newly opened 'Door of Hope' exhibition; studios upstairs were 'open for inspection'; there were two screenings of the Benalla Shorts Film Festival in Gallery 2; the catering team proved a class act at the exhibition opening and film festival. The baristas from the Red Road Cafe moved on to the street, serving coffee and chai non-stop throughout the weekend. 'The Shed' precinct under the 'Three Faces' walls opened for the first time, with beer, wine, cider coffee and wood fired pizzas served to the throng of people watching as two of the walls were transformed.. Diffo's (Cornelia's) 'crunque' sculpture was launched ; busking and other music entertained, with the Meet the Maker market on Saturday and the Three Faces Handmade Market on Sunday providing lots more for people to look at. Fringe events elsewhere in town included Chocolate Lane Cafe Art which featured an exhibition by designer/artist Adam Knapper who has roots in the graffiti movement of the eighties. and performances of 'Exit the King' by LUEY at the Benalla Town Hall. |
