NEA;s Tim Bowtell is currently exhibiting work at Chocolate Lane
Pamella Francis from Chocolate Lane cafe in the lane near the Bridge in Bridge Street loves art. An active member of the Hay arts community before coming to Benalla, Pamella has created a unique 'chocoholics heaven' in a little lane next to the Commercial Hotel.
Late last year Pamella and NEA's Tim Bowtell developed the concept of a partnership between Choolate Lane and NEA which has resulted in an occasional program of exhibitions featuring NEA artists or artists recommended by NEA members.
Merv Beamish's Pop Up Exhibition commenced the exhibition program in mid December 2016, with Merv's warm, impressionistic oil pastels and acrylics perfect for a cafe environment and adding to the welcoming atmosphere at Chocolate Lane.
To add to the atmosphere during the Wall to Wall Festival, Adam Knapper was suggested to Pamela. Adam, who has strong links to the Molyullah area and NEA through his family, exhibited at Chocolate Lane from March 31st to May 13th.. Adam's engaging collection of quirky, affordable café art clearly drew upon his involvement in the graffiti art movement of the eighties. You can read Adam's bio here.

NEA member and oft-times finance whiz Nicole Murphy recently graduated from the Alpine Valley Community Leadership Program. Nicole was nominated for a Hugh Williamson Scholarship by NEA. Valued at $4,330, the Hugh Williamson scholarship supports someone from the region who works or volunteers in the Arts.
Nicole joined twenty other participants meeting fortnightly at different locations across the North East, advancing her knowledge of the region and developing personal leadership skills while networking with a range of regional and state leaders.
Nicole's goals following graduation include 'looking forward to continuing to put myself outside my comfort zone and utilise my newly developed networking skills to help secure financial security for the North East Artisans and seek out grants for community groups that I am involved with"..(AVCLP 2017 Year Book p 19)

Speaking of Community Leadership Programs, NEA has been visited by groups from the Shepparton based Fairley Leadership Program as part of their program of visits within their region. NEA President Tim Schloss has spoken most enthusiastically about his meetings with participants during these visits.

May was a very busy month for workshops - with Margaret Zaal and Kate Jenvey offering two groups of drawing workshops on Wednesdays and Sundays; Merv running the second of his 'Realistic Abstract' workshops, and Deb Dodd offering a series of BYO Mosaic workshops. Marg has also been holding a Thursday morning Botanical Illustration group on a regular basis.
Like winery walkabouts, gallery hopping is a particularly inviting way in which to experience the North East. NEA is a participating gallery in the new 'Gallery Hopping in North East Victoria' map released for the June long weekend.
"Gallery Hopping in North East Victoria' this year has a special meaning for the King Valley Art Show, which is holding its 20th anniversary art show at King River Brewing 4515 Wangaratta-Whitfield Rd King Valley, on the June Long Weekend .
All of these galleries will be open on the June longweekend. Click to enlarge.
